Responsibilities

Financial management: UK and subsidiary offices

  • Manage the preparation and posting of the month end journals including accruals and prepayments.
  • Accurately record transactional journals for smaller subsidiaries of income and expenditure on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure strong controls are in place, maintaining balance sheet reconciliations for all accounts each month and following up risks and issues.
  • Reconcile and ensure completeness and accuracy of all intercompany accounts.
  • Review work performed by others on larger subsidiaries, ensuring appropriate recognition of income and expenditure under UK SORP.
  • Maintain the fixed asset registers and processing monthly depreciation.
  • Ensure income from public fundraising is accurately recorded and reconciled and that Gift Aid is appropriately recognised and claimed.
  • Be primary point of contact for non-finance country staff, third party providers and be point of liaison with the rest of the VSO finance team for VSO’s subsidiaries.

Statutory and tax: UK and subsidiary offices

  • Prepare and file quarterly UK VAT returns, accurately and timely.
  • Ensure VSO complies with all HMRC tax regulations and maximises tax opportunities, completing all returns accurately and on time.
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes and systems to manage UK compliance and efficiency of tax reporting.
  • Undertake on-going education of VSO staff to ensure understanding of the tax implications of various streams of income.
  • Co-ordinate the completion of year end processes and act as the main contact for external auditors for VSO Ireland.
  • Submit dormant accounts for VSO Trading.
  • Liaising with third party providers, submit annual US return.
  • Assist the Group Financial Accountant as required during the VSO audit.
  • Support the Group Financial Accountant and Head of Finance Operations in information provision and representation at VSO Ireland board meetings.

Reporting

  • Produce stand-alone, local currency monthly management reports for all subsidiaries (currently Ireland, USA). Produce monthly balance sheet, SOFA and I&E reporting and analysis for management. Support with the production of additional monthly reporting as required by the Finance Team.
  • Contribute to the annual financial statements for VSO’s subsidiaries, intercompany and the consolidated accounts.

People management

  • Manage the team responsible for day-to-day accounting operations in the UK office, including those responsible for processing income, invoices and expenses.
  • Coach and support the team to ensure they perform to a high standard in line with VSO values.

Payment authorisation

  • Maintain UK authorisation guidelines and timetable, to ensure clear responsibilities and balance work assignments
  • Approve UK payments in line with VSO policy.
  • Work with Group Financial Accountant maintain UK mandate.
Education
  • A fully qualified accountant with a recognised qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA, CPA)

  • Sound knowledge of charity specific accounting, VAT, taxation and other compliance requirements
  • Technical accounting skills, especially in relation to statutory accounting.
  • Strong analytical skills, highly numerate and proven to be detail oriented.
  • Strong IT skills, including accounting and reporting packages and especially Excel.
  • Experience of the not-for-profit sector.
