PROFILE INTRODUCTION    

Our client who is a private equity firm seeks to fill in the position ESG Manager who will provide day to day, as well as strategic support, on implementing ESG activities across the firm, funds and portfolio which will include, working with the investment teams on due diligence, supporting portfolio companies on ESG reporting and project implementation, formal and informal reporting, or research and presentation on new initiatives or regulations. The investee companies are in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia and potentially in Tanzania and Rwanda.

Key areas of Responsibility
  • Contribute to the ESG strategy at all stages of the investment process and support the implementation of sustainable investing and the framework across all the fund’s strategies
  • Provide ESG analysis in the due diligence process for potential investments deals and review consultants ESG due diligence (DD) reports. Support the investees in reverse due diligence for exit purpose.
  • Ensure compliance by portfolio companies with Development Fund Investors (DFI) requirements stated in the fund documents and assist portfolio companies to operate in a manner that protects the environment, resource efficient, respects human rights and adopt the best governance structure.
  • Initiate, support and maintain the ESG performance of portfolio companies by delivering ESG reviews and working with external consultants. Ensure incidents are prevented, recorded or and reported if they occur.
  • Collate and analyze ESG data from portfolio companies on a regular (annual) basis; working with portfolio companies to ensure strong data quality; identifying key trends, reporting to DFI and stakeholders.
  • Oversee reporting, tracking, and maintenance of ESG metrics and KPIs through data collection and benchmarking.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the ESG action plan (ESAP); Continuously monitor the implementation of the ESAP and offer advice on areas of concern and opportunity.
  • Manage external communication to investors and stakeholders on material developments in the Funds ESG performance and provide regular ESG updates.
  • Provide Technical ESG support to portfolio companies to support the improvement of their ESG management systems, policies and procedures including implementation of ESG Action Plans.
  • Ensure compliance with the organization’s policies, procedures, governance, risk and regulatory requirements (ESG-related regulations and filings).
  • Review performance of portfolio companies ESG personnel on a regular basis.

Business Competencies

  • You are an experienced professional with relevant qualifications and diplomas, and at least 4-8 years of experience, with deep and comprehensive knowledge of IFC/World Bank Group Performance Standards and EHS guidelines as well as Kenyan legal and policy frameworks.
  • You have proven experience on conducting impact assessments and/or managing the E&S impacts of very large infrastructure projects especially linear infrastructure i.e. roads, railways, pipelines, power lines.
  • You have demonstrated efficient engagement with key stakeholders in other projects, with good communication skills, and good knowledge of the local institutional environment.
  • You can demonstrate project management in large and complex working environment.
  • You speak English and Swahili fluently. French is a nice to have.

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters in Environmental Science/Engineering/Arts or any social science
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental studies
  • NEMA lead EIA expert
