  • Advanced degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Social work, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • Proven track record in conducting social and economic impact assessments, preferably in the context of infrastructure projects or community development initiatives.
  • Extensive experience working on water supply, sanitation, or infrastructure projects in developing country settings.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social inclusion, gender equality, and sustainable development principles.
  • Ability to prioritize own workload and work with minimal supervision
  • Be a team player
  • Be self-driven and able to work within tight deadlines
  • Detailed-oriented, dependable, productive, flexible and able to handle multiple concurrent tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • At least 5 years of experience working with an NGO in a similar position.

The purpose of this position:

  • The Socio-economic expert will conduct an in-depth assessment of the social and economic implications of the comprehensive infrastructure development project in Moyale. s/he analyze the current social and economic landscape, identify potential opportunities and challenges, and provide actionable recommendations to maximize positive outcomes and mitigate any adverse effects.

The RMF project scope includes:

  • Abattoir and livestock market: Rehabilitation of the existing structures to support local infrastructure.
  • Water supply: rehabilitation of the Odda-Moyale water supply system
  • Boda Boda Sheds and Office Construction: Creating shaded areas in Moyale to support local economic activities and enhance commuter and trader comfort.
  • Road Improvements: Rehabilitation of the access roads to the Abattoir and Stock Market with an aim of Improving transportation infrastructure to facilitate better connectivity and economic growth

Roles and Responsibilities:
The Social Economic expert will undertake the following tasks:
Baseline Analysis:

  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing social and economic conditions in Moyale, focusing on water access, existing abattoir and stock market and their access roads boda boda sheds and Office, utilization patterns, and socioeconomic dynamics.
  • Compile and review relevant data, reports, and studies related to the local context and infrastructure issues.

Impact Evaluation.

  • Assess the potential impact of the rehabilitation and construction projects on various stakeholders, including residents, migrants, women, youth, and marginalized groups.
  • Identify and evaluate potential risks, challenges, and opportunities associated with project implementation.

Stakeholder Engagement.

  • Engage with community members, local authorities, and other stakeholders to gather insights and validate findings.
  • Facilitate focus group discussions, interviews, and surveys to capture diverse perspectives.

Infrastructure-specific Assessments.

  • Analyze the social and economic implications of the Abattoir and Livestock market rehabilitation, including its impact on local business and community welfare.
  • Evaluate the effects of the Boda Boda sheds and office construction on border trade activities, commuter comfort, and overall economic benefits.
  • Assess the impact of rehabilitation of the access roads to the abattoir and livestock market on connectivity, access to markets, and economic activities.

Strategy Development:

  • Develop strategies and interventions to enhance positive social and economic outcomes, promote inclusivity, and foster sustainable community development.
  • Provide actionable recommendations for integrating social and economic considerations into the project design, implementation, and monitoring processes.
  • Represent SND in donor meetings and sharing back information and Intel gathered with Executive Director.
  • Undertake other duties as required
