Responsibilities:

  • Performs health assessment of patients brought to Cath lab to identify their care needs
  • Ensures patients are adequately prepared for procedures and that documentation is up to date
  • Prepares the necessary procedure trays and equipment before procedure while maintain sterility.
  • Maintain highest standards of infection control, as per hospital policies and procedure.
  • Assists the physician to perform procedures, and administers the necessary medications
  • Monitors patients during and after procedures and reports to the physician any abnormal findings e.g. arrhythmias, excessive bleeding from insertion sites, pain etc
  • Participates in life-saving actions such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation
  • Educates patients and families about Cardiac diseases and their therapies
  • Maintains accurate documentation of the procedure, Hemodynamic monitoring, monitor patient vital signs and Medications given in the Cath lab
  • Ensures discharge instructions from Cath lab are clear and documented and hands over the patients to the floors, where applicable.
  • Provides safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices, timely safety checks of IV pumps, oxygen source, and other Cath lab equipment
  • Takes accountability for efficient use of recourses and practice judicious stock control at all times i.e. accurate and timely billing of used CSSD items and Unit drugs
  • Responsible for safe use of Cath lab equipment through proper cleaning, storage, per shift checks of the inventory and timely reporting of non-functional equipment to the nurse manager 
  • Participates in cardiac research projects, unit nursing education and teaching of nurses in other units about the Cath lab and its operations.
  • Participates in Hospital wide quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, Clinical care program certification (CCPC), spot checks and skill checks.
  •   Assists in Coronary Care Unit or Heart clinic in time of low census
  •   Participates in orientation of new nurses

Requirements:

  • Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing from a recognized school of nursing or University
  • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in Critical Care nursing
